Heat pumps have come a long way over the past 15 years. During the winter months, a heat pump may require additional help to maintain the desired temperature in your home. One way a heat pump achieves this is with an electric heat pack inside the air handler. When the temperature outside your house drops, your heat pump will bring on your electric heat to assist in heating your home. When this occurs you will see a red light or AUX on your thermostat, showing you that the heat pump is working.
In addition to the light or AUX displaying on your thermostat when the heat pump turns the electric heat on, you may also notice this signal when the heat pump cycles into defrost cycle. When your heat pump is in the defrost cycle several things or sounds may occur. Your fan may shut off or slow down, the heat pump may sound louder than normal, you may see steam that appears to be smoke, or your electric heat may cycle on while it’s in defrost mode. If the AUX light is on and you don’t see any of these signs that usually occur it may be cause for concern. A heating checkup may be required.
