Thanksgiving wouldn’t be the same without the food. From turkey to stuffing to pumpkin pie, the food on Thanksgiving is a staple of the holiday. Are you in charge of kitchen duty this Turkey Day? Have you been given the role of cleaning up after the feast?
There is a fine line between what food items can and cannot go down the garbage disposal. Here is a guide to help prevent a broken or jammed garbage disposal this Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving foods that should not go down the garbage disposal
Turkey Fat or Grease: Grease is a top cause of drain clogs. When you throw grease into the garbage disposal, it will usually stick in your drains, hardening and congealing. This creates a larger trap for other large food ideas, building a big clog in your drain. Dumping turkey and gravy into the trash is a better and safer way to dispose of them.
Potato Peels and Skins: Potato skins are among the worst things you can put down your garbage disposal. Not only can they contribute to clogged drains, they can also get stuck in the disposal impeller.
Turkey Bones: Any type of animal bones should never be put down the disposal. Smaller bones are likely to get stuck in the drain and larger ones can destroy the impeller blades.
Pumpkin Rinds and Seeds: The insides of a pumpkin can get stuck to the walls of your drain and harden.
Nuts & Shells: Nuts, such as peanuts, can get stuck in the garbage disposal and form a paste that can coat your drains.
Celery: Like potato peels and skins, fibrous celery can get stuck in disposal blades. It’s a good idea to toss celery in the trash instead.
